Qingdao along the Yellow Sea

The coastline of Qingdao in Shandong distict

The beautiful prefecture and city Qingdao, also known by the West by its Postal map spelling Tsingtao, is located in the east of Shandong district.

The word “qing” means “green”, or “lush”, while “dao” means “island”, although Qingdao is located at the southern tip of the Shandong Peninsula.

The city is looking out over the Yellow Sea, and is a major sea port, naval base, a manufacturing center and tourist attraction.

Qingdao attracts many tourists due to its excellent weather and its seaside setting. Unique architecture, parks, sculptures and beaches line the shore. And there are many nice hotels and fine restaurants to find.

Nice places to visit includes the older area of the town, where there is even some surviving Japanese and German architecture (it was a German colony from 1897 to 1914, which was followed by a Japanese occupation), the famous Taoist mountain Laoshan, the Buddhist Zhanshan Temple and the Beer Museum.

In “Underground World of Chinese Mythology” there are lifesize figures and groups depicting scenes from the Chinese mythology.

The city will be the host for several events of the 2008 Olympics, including the sailing competitions which will take place along the complicated shoreline directly offshore from the city.
